'We’d love to introduce him to our nice warm house': From wandering the woods to waiting at the front door, a fearful cat starts to believe he’s finally safe

We first noticed this angel wandering in the woods around our house about a year ago. We started feeding him regularly, but he was very wary of us, so we used a cage to take him to the vet, where he was fixed and given his shots.

I think he came from a nearby trailer because the family moved away around the same time we started to see him in the woods. There was a lot of trash in the yard and it generally looked like a bad situation. I think he may have been born outside. They had a lot of different animals.

He's very nervous of people and likes to stay at least six feet away, although he is happy to look at you through a window. He waits outside the front door for his breakfast every morning but rushes away when he hears me lift the latch.

I'm looking for reassurance that he'll be okay over the winter. I feel so bad thinking of him trying to sleep in the cold. We bought him a cat house with a heated blanket for the porch, but he doesn't use it. I think he is probably sheltering in the barn or the woodshed behind our house.

Also, is it possible that he will warm up to us in time, or is it more likely that he'll always keep his distance? Obviously we'd love to introduce him to our nice warm house, but I can't see that happening any time soon.

We love him either way and are blessed to see his beautiful face every morning.

No_Warning8534 Omg his face. He is adorable. I would try to trap him eith food inside during the day when he is hungry You can continue to socialize him to you during winter when he is inside.

Goaway 5737 I think he looks totally ready for the next step, he just needs help taking that step! Bring him in, give him his own quiet space, and give him time...I bet you'll see him start to blossom soon. Messaging you some info that I think will definitely help! Good luck <3

Logical_conseque….. Awww, he's cute! Don't give up on taming him. I've had many tame up over time. Just keep feeding him at the same place and time every day and get closer and closer. Eventually you'll be able to give him a quick touch. He will scoot away at first but the goal is desensitizing.

If he prefers the barn, maybe give him a box with deep straw (not hay) in there, up off the ground. Cats like some height. He can burrow in that to stay warm. A safe pet plug in water bowl is nice too. And wet food along with separate dry.

ExtinctFauna He'll find your shelter during a cold night, then he'll never want to leave. Your other option is to trap him and force him inside, but giving him autonomy may be better psychologically in the long. run.

Fa... A cute little adventurer! Perhaps (...and even surely!) the barn serves as a pantry. Even if it has been accustomed to being fed, the hunting and survival instinct push it to flush out small rodents which also find refuge there. Try to stay put when he gets closer to

the window or the food you give him. He will eventually understand that you are not a danger to him. With a lot of patience, the distance will gradually reduce. You will eventually be able to brush against it, then touch it, perhaps even caress it at the last moment. Don't try to rush things, it can take a

very long time. How many cats ended up coming home by doing this? I haven't succeeded every time but it's always a great reward to know that you... have been adopted by a cat with whom you will share a moment of life...

Lydia Deets7 My uncle had a farm with a bunch of cats, some of whom were feral and some of whom were not, in northern MN, which gets super cold in the winter. He would feed the cats in the barn at night and most if not all would come running. He would then shut the door to the barn so they were protected from predators.

They had litter boxes, food, water, and also crates. stuffed with straw to keep them warm. Would suggest doing something similar and hopefully this guy will warm up to humans someday.

Music_201 Just give him some time! The cold might force him to use the shelter or you can try moving the outdoor house to inside the barn where he sleeps if that will be safe.
